Lighting designer Shelly Sabel has taken a familiar city accessory and turned it on its head for her simple and colorful Umbrella Chandeliers. The New Yorker used aluminum umbrella pieces and porcelain sockets for her lights, which are outfitted with half frosted bulbs that reflect light towards the bright fabric. Like the lighting umbrellas employed by photographers, her chandelier softens and diffuses light, flatteringly illuminating visitors at the American Design Club’s recent “Hue Are You” exhibition in Brooklyn and a recent Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS fundraiser.
